Project Description

EDI served as the Mechanical, Electrical, and Technology engineers for a new state-of-art criminal justice center that includes the county jail, courtrooms, court administration, sheriff’s office, emergency 911 dispatch, kitchen, probation, information technology and investigation. The justice center included many sustainable design features allowing the building to significantly exceed the building energy code. Design features include:

  • Ground source geothermal central heating and cooling plant (qty 304 230-foot bores)
  • In-floor hydronic radiant heating
  • Energy recovery for exhaust air
  • Occupancy sensors for lighting and ventilation control
  • Daylight harvesting of natural ambient lighting
  • High efficiency motors with variable frequency drives for fans and pumps
  • Full cut-off optics on exterior lighting to reduce light pollution
  • Building-wide programmable lighting control system to reduce electrical usage
  • Fiber-optic communications “ring” topology for redundant communications
  • Courtroom audio and video
  • 911 dispatch infrastructure (power, grounding, etc.)
  • 100% electrical power back-up via “ultra quiet” generator to allow the owner to participate in utility company curtailment program resulting in significant electrical rate reduction and added reliability for operations
